The arrival of George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road back in 2015 proved to be a satisfying rush of adrenaline for audiences who had waited 30 years for more Mad Max. Aside from delighting fans, Fury Road also managed to engage an entirely new generation, please huge numbers of critics and even bring in 6 Oscars at the 2016 Academy Awards. Not bad at all for a bizarre post-apocalyptic tale based entirely in a barren desert landscape and with minimal dialogue.

After taking on the onetime Mel Gibson role of Max Rockatansky, Tom Hardy brought a visceral dynamism to the character that was matched only by Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Imperator Furiosa. The two actors were a highlight for many and all awards and praise for Fury Road aside, it’s perhaps Hardy and Theron’s embodiment of their roles that has pushed George Miller on toward making more. After all, what would any follow up film be without either one of them?

As it currently stands, Tom Hardy has revealed at the ongoing TCA 2017 press tour as well as in an interview with Collider that not only is he anxious to find out exactly what Miller has dreamt up for the future of the franchise, but also that he’s signed on to do three more Mad Max films and that work on the next film (which may or may not be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland) is “pending”. Though he doesn’t know exactly when things will get underway, Hardy was able to confirm that there is “definitely” another Mad Max project on its way. Said Hardy when asked if The Wasteland is happening:

Hardy also spoke about George Miller’s “copious” amount of stories to tell in the franchise, including mention of two separate routes to explore: that of Max Rockatansky and that of Imperator Furiosa. At present, Hardy maintains that he’s looking forward to whatever Miller decides to go to work on.

Yeah, as far as I’ve signed to do three of them. It’s a question of when. I’m not sure it’s called The Wasteland or not ‘cause you never know. These titles change all the time. But, there’s definitely another Mad Max project pending.

I’m anxiously waiting to find out. There’s mythology to do with Mad Max that spans copious amounts of tales. What’s wonderful about George [Miller] is that he’s created sagas for Max and sagas for Furiosa, so it’s what he chooses to focus in on. I’m really just waiting for the call like, “All right, let’s get the leathers on and get back out there and do some more.” It’s there. I’m just waiting for it and looking forward to it.

It’s evident that Hardy loves working with George Miller and admires the filmmaker’s ability to continue to take from and build up the story of Mad Max. On that subject, Hardy had this to say:

It’s quite fascinating that after so many years, Miller decided to return to Mad Max and succeeded at giving the entire franchise new life. What will happen next in the saga is enthralling, to say the least. At the same time however, it’s also a risk on Miller’s part. Fury Road succeeded due to an established fanbase, the talent involved and being a spectacle unlike anything audiences had ever seen. While fanbase and talent involved are safe bets, can Miller continue to reinvent the wheel with three new chapters?

I love working with George [Miller] and the fact that his mythology is so deep. It’s a joy to work with an artist and somebody who has the ability to be a movie maker, as well. It’s the full package, isn’t it?

That’s for audiences to discover in due time. But for now, there’s likely to be plenty of excitement over the prospect of more Mad Max films. And if Tom Hardy’s excitement for more as well as his dedication to George Miller is any indication, Miller has an eager cast on his side – something that always makes a production something special.
