There’s good news for Jay and Silent Bob fans, as Mallrats writer-director Kevin Smith reveals a sequel is still in the works, titled Twilight of the Mallrats. It seems the success of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot has spurred Smith into kicking into gear a revival of another of his beloved properties within the Askewniverse.

A follow up to the 90s cult classic, which dealt with heartbreak and mall-set hilarity, has long been discussed, with the possibility of it even manifesting as a Mallrats television show being suggested at one point. However, it looks to now be confirmed that the sequel will take the form of a feature-length movie, which is a long time coming since the original released way back in 1995.

The director and Silent Bob actor posted a 2019 summary on Instagram, in which he reflected on the highs and lows of his decade, which included nearly dying of a heart attack in 2018 and successfully touring Jay and Silent Reboot across the U.S. Smith then went on to divulge that not only is the sequel to Mallrats still in the works, but a third installment of the Clerks series as well. In addition to that, Smith informed his followers that the Mallrats sequel has a title: Twilight of the Mallrats. See Smith’s full post below.

The title seems a clear indication that the film will explore how main characters like Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee), T.S. Quint (Jeremy London) and the rest are navigating their twilight years, similar to how Jay and Silent Bob Reboot offered a surprising introspective and poignant touch, in addition to the usual hilarious stoner comedy. Original cast members Lee, London and Jason Mewes are all likely to return, but we’ll have to wait and see on Ben Affleck reprising his role as the seedy store manager Shannon.

After spending the last decade offering up experimental indie fare the likes of Red State, Tusk and Yoga Hosers to mixed critical and audience responses, along with guest directing episodes within DC’s Arrowverse, it appears Smith has now firmly planted himself  back into his original, comedic universe of colorful and unusual characters. Smith never elaborated on what will hit screens first out of Twilight of the Mallrats or Clerks 3, but it’s possible he’ll be touring the film across various cities as he did with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, appearing in person and participating in audience Q&As. Stay tuned for Twilight of the Mallrats updates.
