LEGO has had a long and fortuitous relationship with the Star Wars license, dating back to 1999, and has spawned six video games, multiple toy sets, animated short films, and several TV spin-offs. The BrickHeadz line started in 2016 and sold exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con. It featured pairs of comic book characters, like Superman & Wonder Woman, Batman & the Joker, Ironman & Captain America, and Black Panther & Doctor Strange. Future sets included characters from other properties such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Ghostbusters, and more.

The series premiered in November 2019, and with Christmas right around the corner, demand for merchandise was at an all-time high. However, to ensure the surprise reveal of Baby Yoda, the character was kept secret from manufacturers. The trade-off for Disney (and customers) meant that there were no Baby Yoda items available for purchase when they were needed the most. Since then, the company has released everything from Funko POP! figures to phone cases featuring the adorable baby, so it was only a matter of time before LEGO joined the party.
