The Mandalorian’s “Baby Yoda” has now replaced Groot as the Milano’s space baby courtesy of fan art. Disney+’s new series has been making waves online for being Star Wars’ first live-action-episodic project. Its first episode ended with an introductory twist that has only amplified the buzz surrounding it. A rare and cute creature is revealed in Chapter One’s closing moments; Baby Yoda has arrived and fans are loving it.

The last time we saw a fictional-alien infant receive such a warm welcome from fans was at the end of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. After an adult Groot sacrifices himself to save his fellow guardians, Baby Groot is born from the remnants of the original Groot’s body. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 features a Baby Groot singing and dancing as a toddler; however, this is not the first time we get a glimpse of Groot’s theatrics. In the first film’s credits, there’s a scene of Baby Groot (growing like a potted plant) dancing to The Jackson 5’s “ABC” while Drax cleans a knife on their ship, the Milano.

Famed social media artist BossLogic took the liberty of replacing Baby Groot and Drax with Baby Yoda and the Mandalorian in a still from the aforementioned post-credits scene. With the amount of memes, articles, and fan art surrounding Baby Yoda, this particular piece of art is symbolic of Baby Yoda’s similar rise in popularity to that of Baby Groot. BossLogic entitled his piece “Guarding A Galaxy far far away”. Check out his tweet of it, below.

The relationship between Baby Yoda and the Mandalorian will no doubt play a pivotal role in The Mandalorian’s narrative. As the two characters get to know each other and grow closer, it will make it harder for the bounty hunter to collect his bounty. Baby Groot was never at risk of being sold by his shipmates, but the character still resembles Baby Yoda in ways other than cuteness.

It’s only natural to want and draw parallels between the two characters. Baby Groot was a new character that resembled an old one (adult Groot), and Baby Yoda is a new character that resembles the original Yoda; not only in physicality but in purpose. Both Baby Groot and Baby Yoda offer up levity and humor in moments of extreme danger, while at the same time possessing an untapped reservoir of power (Groot has permeating extremities and Yoda has the all-encompassing Force). In Marvel’s latest entries, Baby Groot has already aged into adolescence, making it official: Baby Yoda is everyone’s new favorite space baby.
