The Mandalorian reportedly contains a major Star Wars spoiler in its first episode. There are just under two months remaining until the franchise returns to the big screen via The Rise of Skywalker, but fans of the galaxy far, far away will get to experience new stories in the universe well before that. As the Disney+ streaming service debuts in November, live-action Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian will be available to watch. Set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, the series follows the titular lone gunman as he traverses a lawless corner of the galaxy, doing the best he can in the complicated profession of bounty hunting.

Disney is clearly excited by what The Mandalorian has to offer, already green lighting a second season that’s in production. The studio’s been building up hype with a measured marketing campaign, releasing an official trailer during the 2019 D23 Expo in August. While viewers have a general idea of what to expect, there are still a lot of details being kept under wraps. In some respects, Mandalorian promotion has been as secretive as The Rise of Skywalker. And there’s probably a good reason for that.

According to The New York Times, the first episode of The Mandalorian “contains a dramatic Star Wars universe spoiler.” Obviously, the outlet could not reveal what exactly it is, but that’s a tantalizing tease that will make die-hards even more impatient for the show’s November 12 premiere.

Fans understand that all areas of Star Wars canon are connected, though most of the non-movie materials are supplemental in nature; they help flesh out certain aspects of the films, but don’t really contain any huge revelations that are necessary for general audiences to know (with a few exceptions, of course). The Mandalorian appears to be in a different boat, as long as the Times is not exaggerating the nature of the spoiler. This makes sense, considering what Lucasfilm has invested in their Disney+ slate (they’re also working on an Obi-Wan show and a Rogue One prequel for the platform). They want people to be onboard with the small screen offerings from the jump, and delivering a massive reveal off the bat is the best way to do that. Lucasfilm is hoping The Mandalorian makes an attention-grabbing splash, especially since the Star Wars movies are going on hiatus for a few years after The Rise of Skywalker this December.

As for what the aforementioned spoiler is, that’s anyone’s guess right now. Since The Mandalorian features an Imperial presence, perhaps it’s connected to the old Galactic Empire or the origins of the First Order. Details concerning Emperor Palpatine’s return are probably above The Mandalorian’s pay grade, but maybe the show can cover portions of Supreme Leader Snoke’s backstory or tie into Palpatine’s Contingency Plan (which has already been highlighted in canon novels). That’s all speculation for the time being, so it’ll be interesting to see what Jon Favreau and company have in store when The Mandalorian finally streams. Hopefully, the major spoiler doesn’t disappoint.
