This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 1.

According to actor and director Taika Waititi, fans need to petition to ensure Disney brings back his IG-11 character for The Mandalorian season 2. Last year was quite a busy year for the Thor: Ragnarok director. His rock monster character Korg returned in Avengers: Endgame, his film Jojo Rabbit released to much critical acclaim, and Marvel even announced that Waititi would return to direct the fourth Thor film, titled Thor: Love and Thunder. If that was not enough, Waititi directed the finale of the hugely popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian, where he also voiced one of the new characters, a droid called IG-11.

Created by Iron Man director Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian tells the story of Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian (Mando), a bounty hunter who decides to protect The Child (Baby Yoda). Throughout the first season, Mando makes it clear he has an issue with droids, and that makes his relationship with Waititi’s IG-11 droid all the more interesting. In episode 1, Mando kills IG-11 before the droid can shoot Baby Yoda, but in the finale, after Kuiil reprograms IG-11 to protect Baby Yoda, the droid sacrifices itself to ensure Mando survives and escapes the clutches of Moff Gideon. Now, Waititi believes Star Wars fans need to band together to bring back the character he lent his voice to.

In an interview with The Wrap, the director of The Mandalorian season finale, “Chapter 8: The Reckoning” said: “I feel we just need to start a petition because I think that character, really, he held up the entire season, didn’t he?” Continuing in his typical sarcastic nature, Waititi stated, “From episode 1 all the way through,” IG-11 “was the hero.”

Droids are a big part of the Star Wars universe, and undoubtedly, IG-11 was a powerful character in The Mandalorian, particularly in the season finale. However, considering the droid self-detonated, a return looks unlikely and judging by the director’s comments, he seems to know that, and is having a little fun as it was impossible for IG-11 to be the hero throughout the first season, as he was only a part of three episodes.

There’s been a lot of talk surrounding potential Star Wars Skywalker saga characters appearing in season 2, and according to reports, and even an image Favreau posted, we may get a lot of familiar faces this fall when season 2 hits Disney+. Unfortunately for Waititi, the talk of an IG-11 return may not be at the top of the list for Star Wars fans, but in a world full of droids, the New Zealand born director could potentially return to voice another piece of machinery in The Mandalorian.
