Disney+ has released a handful of posters for The Mandalorian, highlighting some of the new Star Wars characters on the TV show. About a month before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker brings the Skywalker Saga to a close on the big screen, the first ever live-action Star Wars series will begin screening via Disney’s new streamer, taking audiences back in time to life in the Star Wars galaxy, five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. But unlike the previous Star Wars movie spinoffs and cartoon series, The Mandalorian will purportedly focus on life far beyond the reach of the New Republic.
Reactions to The Mandalorian footage screened for members of the press earlier this month were positive, with praise being heaped upon the show’s costly production values, top-notch world building, and generally cinematic feeling and style. Disney’s so confident about the series’ success that it’s gone ahead and started filming the second season, with Jon Favreau once again serving as showrunner. In the meantime, The Mandalorian’s marketing blitz is far from over and is kicking off its final stage this week.
The Star Wars Twitter account unveiled five-new posters for The Mandalorian today, each of which highlights a different character from the show. You can check them all out in the gallery below.
Among those featured here are Pedro Pascal as “The Mandalorian”, Gina Carano as Rebel Shock Trooper-turned-mercenary Cara Dune, Carl Weathers as the bounty hunter guild leader Greef Carga, and the IG-11 droid voiced by Taika Waititi (who’s also one of the directors on season one). The identity of the fifth character featured in these posters remains is unknown for the time being, but is speculated to be the non-humanoid that Nick Nolte is playing on The Mandalorian. It’s been said that Nolte is unrecognizable in his role on the show (physically, that is - his distinct voice should be a dead giveaway), so it would make sense, if true.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway here is how familiar all these characters seem, even though they’re all “new”. Pascal as The Mandalorian, for example, isn’t exactly a far cry from Boba Fett thanks to his armor, and he’s even described as being an extremely-deadly mercenary of few words, much like Jango Fett’s “son”. Similarly, Dune looks like a live-action version of a character from Star Wars Rebels, Carga bears a distinct resemblance to Tobias Beckett from Solo: A Star Wars Story, and most fans thought IG-11 was the bounty hunter IG-88 when they first saw him. As such, the pressure is on The Mandalorian to really develop these characters and provide them with memorable personalities over the course of the first season. Otherwise, they may end up being remembered as “not Boba Fett”, “not IG-88”, and so forth.
The Mandalorian premieres Tuesday, November 12 on Disney+, and will roll-out new episodes on a (typically) weekly basis thereafter.
