Fans of The Mandalorian might have to worry about Baby Yoda, as Giancarlo Esposito reveals he shares scenes with the character in season 2. Esposito plays Moff Gideon, the villain of the show who’s after Baby Yoda/The Child. In season 1 of The Mandalorian, which began in November 2019, Gideon appeared in the last two episodes. The season finale surprised audiences with the reveal that Gideon has the Darksaber, making him even more dangerous to Baby Yoda. Though the weapon has appeared in some Star Wars animated series, The Mandalorian is the franchise’s first live-action show, making this the Darksaber’s first appearance in that format.

Viewers are no fan of Gideon, which isn’t surprising considering how much they love Baby Yoda. It seems like the creature has captured the hearts of everyone on the Internet, contributing to The Mandalorian’s success. Disney has recently caught up to the Baby Yoda craze, finally revealing merchandise earlier this week. This will hopefully help tide fans over until The Mandalorian returns this October with season 2. Despite the premiere date being a long ways off, the show began filming season 2 before the first had even aired. This means that actors like Esposito are already able to tease what’s to come.

Per ComicBook, while speaking at FAN EXPO Vancouver recently, Esposito weighed in on when his character may have direct contact with Baby Yoda. He shared, “I love Baby Yoda, and I’m most excited about having some airtime with that baby.” Esposito elaborated, “I have been able to get my hands on the Baby Yoda [puppet],” confirming the two have already shared scenes. He also spoke highly of the artists behind Baby Yoda, saying, “It’s brilliant how they’ve used what they know about technology to have this particular puppet be so real and exemplify so many different emotions that we have as human beings. It’s really wonderful.”

Though it will be awhile until fans see more live-action Star Wars content like The Mandalorian on Disney+, they can enjoy Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which just released its first episode this week. It will air weekly like season 1 of The Mandalorian did, allowing viewers to savor what will be the show’s seventh and final season. Disney and Lucasfilm also have two other live-action series in the works starring Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi. When those shows finally begin filming, Diego Luna and Ewan McGregor will reprise their roles from the movies.

Though it may make some fans nervous to hear Gideon will share scenes with Baby Yoda, he’s been in tough spots before. Considering the character’s popularity, he’s basically guaranteed to survive the series. However, with the recent news that Gideon will have a bigger role in season 2, it doesn’t mean Baby Yoda won’t face his own set of challenges. Fans will have to wait for The Mandalorian’s return to find out for sure.
