Mark Ruffalo, who plays The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said he couldn’t imagine how Disney and Sony would separate Spider-Man from the rest of the crime-fighting crew. After Spider-Man: Far From Home was released earlier this year, no one knew if or when there would be another Tom Holland-led friendly neighborhood Spider-Man movie in the MCU. Many assumed as much, but no one knew the exact details of the Marvel and Sony deal from 2015 that originally brought Spider-Man into the MCU. A few months back it looked like Spider-Man’s run in the MCU was coming to an end due to a dispute between Sony and Marvel’s parent company Disney. However the support of the fans (and even Tom Holland) quickly deterred that from happening.

In September, it was announced by Marvel and Sony that Spider-Man would stay in the MCU, with the studios confirming a third solo Spider-Man movie hitting theaters in 2021 and Holland set to return. Holland is the third live-action Spider-Man, but the first to be mixed into a universe like the MCU. He was first seen in Captain America: Civil War, and has starred in two solo movies in addition to appearing in Avengers: Infinity War and Avenger: Endgame. To continue the trend of not only starring as the titular character, Holland will appear in another Marvel movie before it’s all said and done. But while Spider-Man’s future in the MCU is safe for now, there was a time when it was up in the air, and some of Holland’s fellow MCU stars voiced their opinions on the matter.

In an interview with ET on the red carpet of his new film, Dark Waters, Ruffalo spoke about the Spider-Man deal between Disney and Sony, saying:

While the three-time Oscar nominee is referring to Disney and Sony as “them,” it’s definitely good for fans as well, although the wait won’t be a short one for the untitled Spider-Man 3, which hits theaters on July 16, 2021. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who is also developing a Star Wars film, produced both Spider-Man solo films, Homecoming and Far From Home, and will be producing the next Spider-Man movie. Feige’s busy schedule, which also includes working with newly acquired Fox characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four, was speculated to be one of the reasons Disney and Sony would go their separate ways on Spider-Man. But the deal eventually came through.

I think it’s amazing. He’s a great guy, he’s a great actor, and yeah. I had a good feeling that they would work it out. It’s good for them, and I was sad that that it would even… I just can’t even imagine, after what we’ve all done together, like, how you would separate them.

With a year and a half until the third installment of Holland as Spider-Man, it’s the perfect time to dive into what we know about the upcoming film. After directing each of the first two films in this now-trilogy, Jon Watts is back to direct the third, untitled movie. Zendaya is returning as the beloved M.J. One of the most popular fan theories surrounding this is the possible introduction of the Sinister Six. In fact, Sony producer Amy Pascal more than hinted toward the possibility of Spider-Man facing the Sinister Six in an upcoming movie, but it’s unclear if that would be in Spider-Man 3, a future MCU movie or a different film altogether.
