Since the very beginning of Peter Parker’s comic book story, The Daily Bugle has been an essential part of Spider-Man’s mythology and character. Now the time has come for the Marvel Universe’s most iconic newspaper to take the spotlight, and start making news, rather than just reporting on it. It’s time for a new limited series, with Amazing Spider-Man: Daily Bugle.

The new series officially announced by Marvel promises to give readers an inside look at the exciting world of investigative journalism. And to do it, the new series will be following protagonist Robbie Robertson. Notable for being a far more dedicated investigative journalist, and less sensational than Daily Bugle boss J. Jonah Jameson, Robertson’s story will dive into the past of both Spider-Man and Kingpin. And like any great news story, this series is promised to deliver revelations guaranteed to change the way readers think about Spider-Man. And from the sound of it, do the same for any character who’s ever crossed paths with Spider-Man in or out of his costume.

The series is set to run for five issues, with its storyline running concurrently to the events of Nick Spencer’s current run on Amazing Spider-Man. However, writing duties on this parallel storyline will be entrusted to Mat Johnson (Hellblazer Special: Papa Midnite, Incognegro, Loving Day) in his debut series for Marvel Comics. He’ll be joined by Black Panther and The Crew artist Mack Chater, with the first issue’s cover art courtesy of Mark Bagley. Take a look below:

There’s no doubt that a series showing the exploits of superheroes from the ground level has potential. Indeed, it led to one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of the past two decades in Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross. Adding in the journalism angle, and the tease of a bombshell story with spider-Man at its heart, and we’ll let the fans speculate until the first issue arrives to show how deep this story will truly go…
