When it comes to Disney+, the aspect most fans are discussing is the exclusive content. According to data posted earlier this month, many fans are excited for the new Marvel and Star Wars shows coming to the streaming service. On the Marvel side, it’s easy to see why fans are excited. Unlike the shows that have aired on cable, the Disney+ content will star the actors from the movies. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will feature the two title characters, and bring back Baron Zemo. Hawkeye will take place after Avengers: Endgame, and bring Kate Bishop into the fold. Not only all this, but Disney+ will also premiere new characters, such as She-Hulk and Moon Knight. With reports stating these shows will have big budgets, fans appear to have a lot to look forward to.
According to Variety, budgets for the Marvel programs on Disney+ are expected to be similar to a Marvel film production. This means the shows can have budgets as high as $150 million, and typically not lower than $100 million. To compare, the production budget for Thor: Ragnarok was $180 million. So, the thought that Marvel programs could reach $150 million is staggering. Many television shows do not have that kind of budget.
It’s easy to see why the Marvel programs will reportedly have big budgets. These shows are being marketed not just as programs, but as extensions of what is seen in the cinema. As the article in Variety notes, an insider says Kevin Feige held meetings with Marvel Studios executives to see how to maintain the standards of visuals seen in the movies. High budgets will likely ensure the special effects and overall look of the shows will match the visual quality of the films.
Everything is pointing to the Marvel programs on Disney+ being a success. Interestingly, this comes just as most Marvel programs on other channels are either finished, or canceled. Agents of SHIELD is concluding with its seventh season. The Netflix Marvel shows were all canceled. Ghost Rider, a show that was supposed to be developed for Hulu, was canceled due to creative differences. It looks like the future of Marvel’s characters on television is on Disney+, but time will tell.
