Warning: SPOILERS for Old Man Quill #12

The Guardians of the Galaxy are set to make a heroic relaunch in the world of Marvel Comics, more united, and stronger than ever! At least… that seemed to be the case. But already, the idea that the Guardians comic will start fresh in January 2020 is hitting some trouble, as Gamora looks like she’s starting her own version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. And now, they know the two team members who will form the heart of the story, as well.

It’s true that the Guardians are enjoying more reboots than most comic teams, with Star-Lord relaunching a new Guardians of the Galaxy team just last year. Back then the reasons centered on broken friendships, hard feelings, and a sense of abandonment and betrayal. Not to mention how the massive Infinity Wars event got Drax killed. But if the latest Guardians issue seemed like a happier ending than fans should be used to, it may only last another two issues total.

That isn’t pessimism speaking, but the new solicitations released by Marvel for their March releases. Fans who have been following the news know that February of 2020 will find Peter Quill “fighting for his life against the King of the Gods!” And the ominous promise that a black hole bomb will detonate, ending the Guardians’ first mission in cataclysmic fashion. Will the Guardians be done for good? Not judging by the cover art for Guardians of the Galaxy #3. Take a look:

It’s a safe bet that every long time Guardians fan will be happy to see Blackjack O’Hare joining the team’s roster, and Gamora given the spotlight. But the similarities to the first issue cover (putting Peter and Rocket in the same position) suggests a more meaningful swap may be on the way. Will Star-Lord be pushed out? Presumed dead? Or is Gamora assembling a team of her own? We’ll have to wait for the full issue to find out.
