Marvel is rush-soliciting Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr.‘s Eternals run back to print ahead of the film’s release. The hardcover will be coming out in July. The rushed release could mean that The Eternals film is set to follow some of the same plots as the comic.

In the mid-’70s, Jack Kirby returned to Marvel and wrote The Eternals. The book told the story of a human-like alien race with God-like powers who take on the evil, mutated Deviants. There hasn’t been a lot revealed about the Chloe Zao-directed film, except for a few behind the scenes pictures and the previous unveiling of a fantastic cast including Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Don Lee, Gemma Chan, and Kumail Nanjiani.

The Eternals will be Marvel’s most Sci-Fi film to date. As for the plot, it would make sense the film would follow Gaiman and Romita Jr.’s story from 2006. While there no doubt will be plenty of visual inspiration from Kirby’s original epic, Gaiman and Romita Jr.‘s Eternals told a much more coherent story. In the arc, the Eternals are living on Earth without the knowledge of their past or powers. Once the Deviants wake up the Dreaming Celestial, the Eternals band together and try to awaken those with wiped memories to uncover their past and take on the pending threat.

Drawing from this plot would actually make quite a bit of sense for The Eternals movie. The plot synopsis for the film reveals the Eternals have been living on Earth for more than 7000 years. Having Ikaris (Madden) or another character having to track down the Eternals and awaken their memories would be an interesting way to debut a handful of new heroes and villains. It would also answer the question of why the Eternals didn’t do anything to help during Avengers: End Game. If they didn’t remember who they were, they’d just react to the events as any normal human being would.

There’s not a lot of modern material for The Eternals to adapt. Gaiman and Romita Jr.’s series would serve as a perfect introduction to the characters while justifying why they remained silent as Thanos arrived. Perhaps, Marvel is just rush-soliciting Eternals to give readers more options when trying to learn about the characters and the world they inhabit - although, it would be surprising if The Eternals movie didn’t borrow a few ideas from the comic book.
