While all hope may be lost for one day seeing The MCU’s Avengers team up with Netflix’s Defenders, Marvel will still be giving fans a chance to see the two groups come together in the upcoming epic Avengers:Defenders/ Tarot in the new year.

Written by Alan Davis with art by Paul Renaud, those fans hoping the Defenders name means appearance from Daredevil or Luke Cage alongside Captain America will have to keep on wishing. This event will be recruiting the original Defenders referred to by the name. Classified as a ’non-team,’ the original assortment of outsiders only shared the fact that in previous adventures, they were often known for following their own agendas (and not really being team players). From the sound of it, that won’t be changing in their new incarnation

Starting in the 1970s, the team consisted of its own lead trio: Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Namor the Sub-Mariner. Similar to the Avengers roster, it went through a slew of members, however the team consistently included the Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Hellcat, and the Gargoyle. Tarot #1 will bring both the Avengers and Defenders together when persistent rogue Namor the Sub-Mariner is forced to seek out his former Invaders teammate Captain America when he seemingly recovers a long-lost memory from his time fighting in World War II. This memory will bring together both of their former teams, as they are pulled into the conflict. The even bigger mystery is the main antagonist for the story, “Ichor of Ish’lzog,” who promises to bring with them “a labyrinth of pain, destruction and madness” for the titled heroes.

The first issue’s cover may offers a bit more of a tease of the story to come, with the Avengers team consisting of Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, Thor and Vision, while the Defenders feature Hulk, Valkyrie, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer. As with most team-ups, we can expect the two groups to be pitted against each other before coming together to stop a common enemy–and the symmetry of the heroes could offer a clue as to who will face off with whom.

Facing Hulk against Captain America and not Thor does seem a bit suspect however, so fans should be sure that this story will offer surprises along the way. The return of Valkyrie is also leaving us scratching our heads, as Jane Foster is currently the last Valkyrie. Whatever the answers may be, they’re not being offered in DC’s official solicitations just yet. But fans can read it all below, before Tarot #1 goes on sale in January 2020.
