Marvel’s Avengers finally gives video games their own version of the greatest superhero team out there, and fans have been eagerly anticipating every detail. Announced on Marvel Entertainment’s YouTube in January 2017, Marvel’s Avengers is co-developed by Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) and Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex: Human Revolution).

Marvel games have been a mixed bag over the years, but Marvel’s Spider-Man helped set a new precedent for quality from the franchise. Fans are hoping Marvel’s Avengers can live up to those same heights, and gameplay details so far show that the game is dedicated to delivering that superhero spectacle.

Square Enix has delivered plenty of details on the story and gameplay for Marvel’s Avengers, so we have plenty of info to dive into on playable characters, potential villains, and when the story takes place.

Marvel’s Avengers Release Date Info

Marvel’s Avengers releases on September 4, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. It was originally scheduled to launch on May 15, but Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics made the decision to delay the game in order to work on refining it.

In an official statement, Crystal Dynamics said “We committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.”

Marvel’s Avengers Story

Marvel’s Avengers has a brand new story, separate from any existing continuity in comics or the MCU. Square Enix released a story trailer at E3 2019, finally giving fans their first glimpse at the story for Marvel’s Avengers.

It all starts on A-Day, a holiday celebrating the superhero team, as Captain America and the rest of the team are unveiling their new hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. A catastrophic accident brings the celebration to a screeching halt, and the Avengers are blamed for all the death and destruction, leading to the disbandment of the team.

Fiver years later, San Francisco has been rebuilt by A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) and superheroes have been outlawed. A young Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) discovers a secret that shows the Avengers could have been set up, and it’s up to her to start bringing the team back together.

A talented voice cast will be bringing the Avengers to life, including Troy Baker (The Last of Us) as Bruce Banner,  Jeff Schine (Telltale’s The Walking Dead: Season 3) as Captain America, Travis Willingham (Batman: The Telltale Series) as Thor, Laura Bailey (Uncharted 4) as Black Widow, and Sandra Saad (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) as Ms. Marvel.

Marvel’s Avengers Gameplay

After E3 2019, Square Enix gave a good idea of what Marvel’s Avengers would be, and they’ve since released the full gameplay demo of A-Day. Marvel’s Avengers will be a third-person action-adventure title with some RPG elements mixed in, letting you customize the look and abilities of your heroes. You can play through the story in single-player, but multiplayer side missions let you team up with other players in co-op.

Each playable hero will be completely different, and the A-Day demo shows gameplay for the entire main group; Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow. The known playable characters are as follows.

  • Iron Man Captain America Hulk Thor Black Widow Ms. Marvel

Costumes for the characters will be pulled from every corner of the Marvel universe according to Crystal Dynamics, and both Taskmaster and Abomination have appeared as villains, as well as the organization A.I.M.

Square Enix announced during their E3 2019 presentation that Marvel’s Avengers will receive a wealth of updates for years after launch. While they haven’t detailed everything, it certainly sounds like Marvel’s Avengers will be some kind of “living game,” adding new characters and content.
