Cloak & Dagger is officially a go at Freeform, with the Marvel TV series having received a 10-episode season 1 order. Over the next few years, Marvel will be bringing a number of new properties to TV, across multiple networks. Over the next six months or so, we’ll be seeing The Defenders on Netflix and Inhumans on ABC (after a brief stint in IMAX theaters). We’re also scheduled to get The Punisher on Netflix later this year. Meanwhile, production is moving along for Hulu’s Runaways, in addition to Cloak and Dagger.

The Cloak & Dagger pilot wrapped filming not too long ago, so fans have been anxious to hear any more news about the series. We know who the two leads will be, along with a number of supporting characters. What’s been unknown, however, is how Marvel will tweak Cloak and Dagger’s origins from the comics. In fact, until now it wasn’t a given that the show would even make it to series - and how many episodes it might have.

Thanks to a new report from MIP, we’ve finally got an update on Cloak & Dagger. During a presentation for Disney Distribution at the MIPTV event, Senior Vice President Mark Endẽmano offered attendees teasers for a number of upcoming shows. Along with Inhumans, Cloak & Dagger was previewed. It was also confirmed that the show had been ordered to series by Freeform and season one will consist of 10 episodes. Speaking briefly on the project, Endẽmano said:

While Endẽmano mostly reiterated the show’s synopsis with his statement, it’s interesting to note that Cloak & Dagger was featured with Inhumans. Given that the latter is set to hit screens this fall, that could mean that the former is further along than Runaways. We haven’t heard whether Hulu have given their Marvel show a series order yet, so we could end up seeing Cloak & Dagger first. At this point, it’s unlikely to come in the fall, but early winter or spring of 2018 seems a safer bet.

“Cloak & Dagger is about character and emotion above all. It tells of a romance between Tandy and Tyrone in a way that we haven’t really seen before in a Marvel TV series. So think Romeo and Juliet though I can tell you that they won’t be dying at the end of the first episode!”

The other interesting thing about the 10-epiosde run means it will fall more in line with Agent Carter and the Netflix shows. We heard awhile back that Cloak & Dagger’s budget will match Marvel’s Netflix shows. If this is true, and their production schedule is for three less episodes, we could be seeing some phenomenal effects work on the Freeform series. Given the powers of Cloak and Dagger, that’s good news for fans and general audiences alike. Hopefully, more news on the series will follow soon.

Meanwhile, Marvel is continuing to ramp up the visibility of Cloak and Dagger across their other forms of media. The Marvel Games Twitter just posted some new images of the two heroes, joining the mobile game Marvel Puzzle Quest.

It’s safe to assume that the characters will soon pop up in other mobile games from Marvel, such as Future Fight and Avengers Academy. For fans of the heroes, this will be an exciting time, as Marvel are likely to push the two into the spotlight ahead of the show’s release.
