New photos from the set of Eternals tease fans with an unknown location. Officially announced during Marvel Studios Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Chloe Zhao-directed film will introduce fans to the franchise’s newest key players. Although given what’s known about its premise,  chances are that most of the characters have already been roaming around the universe, they’ve just yet to make their presence known.

Boasting a star-studded cast of characters, the primary cast of Eternals was announced by Kevin Feige at SDCC, confirming Angelina Jolie as Thena, Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, and Don Lee as Gilgamesh. Several weeks later, the Marvel Studios chief graced the stage again at D23, revealing three additional actors boarding the project: Gemma Chan as Sersi, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Black Knight. Eternals’ plot specifics are still being kept under wraps, but its narrative is tipped to span thousands of years - all the way back from their origins to the present day.

As principal photography continues for Eternals, more and more set photos are making their way online. Fans have had their first looks at Jolie as blonde-haired Thena, Madden as Ikaris and even Chan as Sersi. The former two reveals the movie’s setting in the past, while the latter one is seemingly set in the present time. While there are no actors in the latest batch of set images from the movie, and there’s no context to where and how this fits in the film, it coincides well with the idea that the movie’s narrative will be told in several centuries, revealing the origins of the MCU.

With set photos proving that Eternals story (a previously-released one teases a sequence during the medieval times) will be traced back centuries, it’s safe to assume that the film’s key characters are already existing in the MCU. Given this, the main question is why they’ve yet to factor in any of the films in the universe thus far. Of course, there’s the possibility of references here and there, but considering what the universe had to go through against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it’s curious why they stayed hidden. That’s unless Marvel Studios is mining inspiration from Neil Gaiman’s take on the characters, which featured them starting with wiped memories.
