Marvel’s Helstrom TV series is still going ahead on Hulu, and has officially revealed its cast. Marvel TV has taken fans on something of a rollercoaster in recent years. Debuting with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2013, the various live-action projects were originally conceived as offshoots of the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the mantra of “it’s all connected”. The inaugural show was soon joined on ABC by Agent Carter and, in 2017, Inhumans. Despite considerable acclaim and a passionate following, the former was canceled after two seasons. The latter, meanwhile, was derided by critics and fans alike before being axed after one. The Marvel/Netflix shows suffered similar fates - each being canceled after only two or three seasons. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was more successful in avoiding the ax. It was announced, however, that the seventh season would also be the last.
Daimon Hellstrom debuted on the page back in 1973. Created by Roy Thomas and Gary Friedrich, the character offered a more horror-tinged side to superheroism. First appearing alongside Ghost Rider, he later appeared in a number of other titles, including a recurring presence as part of The Defenders. Earlier in the year, it was also announced that the character would make his live-action debut via Hulu. A new Ghost Rider show was also planned, with Gabriel Luna set to return as a new incarnation of Robbie Reyes. Last month, however, it was confirmed that Hulu was not moving forward with Ghost Rider. As such, the fate of Marvel’s Helstrom was left firmly up in the air.
According to a new press release from Marvel TV, the series is definitely still happening. The official description states that Marvel’s Helstrom will follow Daimon and Ana Helstrom, the children of a mysterious serial killer (and potentially The Devil). Sharing a complicated dynamic, the siblings both dedicate themselves with tracking down the worst of humanity - each with their attitude and skills. Tom Austen will play Daimon, a professor of ethics by day and a determined exorcist/demon hunter by night. Ana, meanwhile, will be played by Sydney Lemmon (Fear the Walking Dead). Traumatized by their Father as a child, Ana is equally driven to rid the world of similar evils.
As for the rest of the cast, Robert Wisdom (Watchmen) will also star as a keeper of occult knowledge known as Caretaker. Ariana Guerra (Insatiable) will play Gabriella Rossetti, a representative of the Vatican and an ally of Daimon’s. Similarly, Alain Uy will portray Chris Yen, Ana’s business partner. And, in the greatest meta-move since Marc Webb directed the Amazing Spider-Man movies, Daimon and Ana’s mother, Victoria Helstrom, will be played by Elizabeth Marvel (Homeland). Tormented by demons both real and imagined, Victoria has been institutionalized for decades under the care of Dr. Louise Hastings, played by June Carryl (Mindhunter).
Recent reports suggested that Marvel TV may be finished - especially in the wake of the official MCU shows coming to the Disney+ streaming service. It would seem, however, that reports of its demise have been greatly exaggerated - at least for the time being. The Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Leob, even stated in the official release that Marvel’s Helstrom will hopefully be the first installment of a new franchise based on Marvel’s Adventure into Fear comic book series. Whether that will ultimately come to fruition remains to be seen. But, between this new show and the upcoming third season of Marvel’s Runaways, Marvel TV will, for now, potentially continue to somewhat thrive on Hulu.
