Nothing can stop Juggernaut, except maybe a Krakoa gate. The on-again, off-again X-Men frenemy isn’t welcome in the mutant paradise, even when plenty of the X-Men’s enemies, such as Pyro, Mystique and Magneto, now stand shoulder to shoulder with their former foes on the island paradise. Since Juggernaut isn’t technically a mutant, he’s not welcome on Krakoa. If that’s the case, just where does he belong in the world?

Juggernaut first appeared in The X-Men #12 way back in 1965. The abusive stepbrother of Charles Xavier, Cain Marko discovers the Gem of Cyttorak while stationed in Korea, gaining unstoppable super-strength as a result. Taking the name Juggernaut, the character went on to become one of the most enduring X-Men foes. However, the character has flirted with heroism on several occasions and has even joined several X-Men teams. Unfortunately, it appears his status as a normal human prevents him from standing by his stepbrother’s side on Krakoa.

That’s what the new Juggernaut series from Fabian Nicieza and Ron Garney looks to explore. Despite being the stepbrother of Charles Xavier and a recent member of the X-Men, Juggernaut has been given the boot. Fortunately, Juggernaut will meet up with a mysterious young girl named D-Cel, with the ability to decelerate powers. The mini-series will pair the two lost souls together in an adventure that will determine their place in a world that has apparently moved on without them. And according to IGN, Nicieza says Juggernaut and D-Cel will have an “Arya and the Hound dynamic.”

This isn’t Nicieza’s first time writing anti-heroes though. He collaborated with artist Rob Liefeld on three issues of New Mutants, resulting in the creation of the Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool. Nicieza would go on to write Deadpool: The Circle Chase mini as well as the first miniseries for another popular anti-hero, Cable. The Juggernaut himself even appeared in the second Deadpool movie as the film’s chief antagonist.

With Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men relaunch making waves throughout the Marvel universe, it’s interesting to see which characters are affected or otherwise left behind by Krakoa’s supposed mutant utopia. Beyond that, Juggernaut has established himself as a force to be reckoned with, but it will be interesting to see how he interacts with D-Cell, especially given his mixed track record as Xavier’s stepbrother. Despite being something of a meme in pop culture, Juggernaut has shown himself to be a complex and dynamic character. What status quo this mini-series will set up for Cain Marko has the potential to shake the foundations of the X-Men.
