Marvel Comics fans of the mid-2000s won’t need to be told how the Annihilation event redefined the universe, introducing readers to a new take on the Guardians of the Galaxy, along with Richard Rider’s Nova, the universe’s greatest hero. But coming this December, the sequel series Annihilation - Scourge threatens to repeat the feat… only this time, Annihilus is going to be on the heroes’ side.
The coming event will be told throughout the pages of Silver Surfer, Nova, Beta Ray Bill, and more tie-in issues. Fortunately for newer Marvel Comics readers, writer Matthew Rosenberg has said knowledge of the original Annihilation event won’t be necessary to follow the new chapter. And now, fans can put that to the test themselves by diving into the first official preview of Annihilation - Scourge Alpha. It’s here where the story begins, and where Annihilus makes his stance in the coming war known.
Speaking with Newsarama, Rosenberg reiterated his intentions to please fans of the first Annihilus – a group including himself and artist Juanan Ramirez. The original Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest are some of my favorite Marvel books of all time because they are so big in scale and yet so full of great characters and real drama. That’s what we’re doing here. It’s huge stakes, brutal action, universe destroying threats, and some of the best heroes (and not-quite heroes) the Marvel Universe has to offer thrown headfirst at it. We’re definitely paying tribute to the original Annihilation books, but I think for fans of those books they will be shocked at where this goes. And if you’ve never read Annihilation, stop reading this and go read it right now. Or maybe finish reading this, and then go read it. Either way, read it today.
