Warning: SPOILERS for Captain Marvel #11

Marvel has made their once mysterious Infinity Stones famous around the world, thanks to Thanos of the MCU. But in the comics, the Infinity Gems have been given their very own story, scattering them to the corners of Marvel’s Universe… but the Reality Stone has finally returned.

At the end of the recent Infinity Wars comic event, Adam Warlock put an end to their threat. Sending the Infinity Stones out into the cosmos with souls of their own (a final use of the Soul Stone) they were free to go wherever they should please, seeking out life of their own. And it turns out the Reality Stone ended up where no one would have ever guessed. The answer has been revealed in Captain Marvel #11, but it hasn’t found its new home inside Carol Danver. Its new host is actually Captain Marvel’s new arch-enemy Star, a.k.a. Ripley Ryan.

The series previously showed Carol literally tearing the Kree device snuck into her chest to leech her powers to Star (yes, just like in The Wolverine). And after getting back her full Captain Marvel strength and defeating Star, the villain is sent to the Raft. Even de-powered, Captain Marvel knows she isn’t to be trusted, after trying to kill most of New York City. So Captain Marvel argued with Captain Marvel argued with Iron Man to put her in the most secure place she could think of. But it seems like that doesn’t matter now, as she just got a major upgrade…

Ripley sits in her cell, wondering how she can still be alive after everything she went through… and having a giant hole in her chest is at the top of that list. Only then does she realize how strong she feels inside–eventually realizing she not only possesses the Reality Stone, she IS the Reality Stone. So what is Riply going to get up to now that sh’e busted out of the Raft? Readers can only assume that whatever it is, it isn’t good. She tried desperately to kill Captain Marvel, but failed. Will she attempt to kill her again?

Ripley Ryan is instantly one of Marvel’s most powerful supervillains thanks to the Reality Stone. The question is, how will she use it? Or more importantly, why did the Reality Stone choose her? This major reveal won’t be a cliffhanger for long, as Marvel’s Star is getting her own comic book series starting in January of 2020. The synopsis teases that after Star finds herself more powerful than ever, no one in the Marvel Universe is prepared for what it means. If there was ever a reason to be excited about a new series, this is it.
