The recent surprise announcement of Marvel Future Revolution, a new mobile RPG from Netmarble, was actually planned since the game was teased 5 years ago at Marvel Future Fight’s launch. Future Fight was a mobile RPG with a rich variety of playable characters.

That game was also developed by Netmarble, and it offered plenty of available superheroes and villains with an emphasis on different cosmetics and visual representations of famous comic book icons. According to the in-game lore, the very fabric of reality has been compromised, which resulted in alternative dimensions colliding. In the launch trailer for the game, Nick Fury warned the heroes about this global threat and teased the date for another possible reveal.

The five-year-old trailer on YouTube contains the date 02/24/2020, which corresponds with last Monday - the day when Marvel teased an upcoming video game announcement. Yesterday, it was revealed that the game in question was Marvel Future Revolution, the first proper open-world mobile RPG for the company. Judging by the reveal trailer, a lot of development effort has been put into the title, which further supports the theory that the game was actually planned for a reveal five years ago. Bill Rosemann, Vice President and Head of Creative at Marvel Games, confirmed this theory to Screen Rant during a phone call:

The exact date can be seen in the left bottom corner of the video when Nick Fury first appears. Having an announcement date set this early is a bold move by Marvel. It’s a remarkable case of long-term planning and confidence, but most importantly, it’s an engaging way of interacting with the community. Fans of Marvel video games will undoubtedly pay more attention to hints and teases from now on. What really matters though is that the development of Future Revolution probably started years ago, which is a sign of a proper AAA project albeit a mobile one.

“That’s how we roll at Marvel Games and Netmarble. We think that far out.”

Marvel Future Revolution indeed looks splendid. The sole fact that there are only four officially confirmed playable superheroes indicates that most of the development resources were spent on the quality gameplay and interactive content rather than a huge roster of characters. It’s very likely that Netmarble will eventually add new heroes to encourage spending on cosmetic microtransactions, but until then, the focus is probably on the game itself.
