With two stunning new reveals of Marvel Comics’ X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man/Venom covers, this year’s Free Comic Book Day 2020 promises to be another stellar moment for comic fans. 2020’s Free Comic Book Day event, the comic book industry’s popular annual celebration, features forty-seven complimentary comics with titles from major publishers and independent houses. On Saturday, May 2, new fans and enthusiastic collectors can expect free books ranging from Bladerunner to Little Lulu: No Boys Allowed, Naruto to Super Mercado Mix Tape to Critical Role & Norse Mythology to Robert Kirkman’s Firepower, at participating comic book shops worldwide.

The first Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) was held in 2002 to coincide with the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film. Over the past eighteen years, the annual event organized by the industry’s largest distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors, has marshaled the release of millions of Free Comic Book Day special edition comic books. FCBD was originally the brainchild of Joe Field, the trade writer, and owner of Flying Colors Comics.

Marvel Comics recently unveiled two covers for their exclusive FCBD releases, X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man / Venom with each free title containing two separate stories from fan-favorite writers and artists. The X-Men freebie features a story by Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz that publisher Marvel Comics claims “will lead into a game-changing summer for all of X!” A second, undisclosed story by Tom Taylor and Iban Coello will foreshadow an upcoming Marvel epic with speculation from comic fans on Twitter prompting Taylor to state the comic was not merely an X-Men story — directing attention to a February Coello tweet featuring an unlettered illustration of Iron Man. The Amazing Spider-Man / Venom two-in-one collects a pair of stories from Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, Jed MacKay, Patrick Gleason and more, and promises the Free Comic Book Day title will connect to future adventures coming in Venom, Amazing Spider-Man and Black Cat comics due out this year.

The perennial comic fan-fest is sponsored by your friendly neighborhood comic shop as well as Gold and Silver Sponsors from publishers like Marvel across the industry and partners Funko, ReedPop, and San Diego International Comic-Con. With forty-seven Free Comic Book Day special edition comic books on offer this May, the annual event is certain to draw the attention of fans new to comics and heroes of all shapes and sizes.
