Matthew Vaughn says he is still interested in directing the Fantastic Four movie for Marvel. Vaughn has worked on a couple of comic book movies before such as Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service, but he also kick-started the X-Men prequel series with X-Men: First Class in 2011. Vaughn also produced the 2015 Fantastic Four, which was panned by fans and critics alike.

For a while, it seemed impossible for the Fantastic Four to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all that changed when Disney acquired film and TV assets from 21st Century Fox. After those assets were bought, Disney took control of Fox’s IP, which included the rights to the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. Fantastic Four may not have a release date just yet, but it was confirmed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel Studios is developing a Fantastic Four movie. Fantastic Four may be part of Phase 5 or beyond in the MCU, but Disney likely won’t waste time when it comes to developing a story and finding a director to helm the project.

In an interview with Comic Book, Vaughn explained that he is still interested in making a Fantastic Four movie under Marvel Studios since the Fantastic Four is one of his favorite comic books. He also mentioned that having the Fantastic Four IP is very valuable for Disney, just as much as having IP for Spider-Man. Vaughn’s full comment can be read below:

When asked about Marvel’s first family in the past, Vaughn seemed just as enthusiastic to tackle the project. In 2017, Vaughn had mentioned rebooting the Fantastic Four as a way to make up for the 2015 film. After Disney acquired the IP, Vaughn was still on board to make the film with Marvel and even said he wanted to make it like a live-action Incredibles movie. At one point it was also believed that Legion creator Noah Hawley was making a Doctor Doom solo movie, but those plans seemed to have fallen through the cracks when Disney acquired Fox.

“Yeah I’ve always loved the idea of doing Fantastic Four as it was originally written. I mean it’s one of my favorite comics and I actually think that Fantastic Four, as a nice piece of IP, is in theory as big as Spider-Man. I think those, the values of Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, I think those are the reason, if you’re a kid, you can imagine being a part of the Fantastic Four family and you can imagine being Peter Parker. So yeah, I think Fan-Four would be the one that would excite me the most.”

While it remains to be seen how Disney will introduce the Fantastic Four into the MCU, many fans would be on board with Vaughn as the film’s director. Despite being attached to 2015’s Fantastic Four, the comic book movies that Vaughn actually directed did well financially and critically. For now, Vaughn is no doubt focused on The King’s Man, which he wrote, produced, and directed, but having him be more hands-on with a Fantastic Four movie could be beneficial to the MCU.
