According to Apple’s system status webpage, several of its iCloud services are experiencing issues this evening. The support page shows that Documents in the Cloud, iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, iMessage, iWork for iCloud, Mail Drop, and Photos are all experiencing intermittent service issues. The outages have ben going on since 8AM PT/11AM ET, if not longer since Apple is usually late to update its system status graph. Last night, Beats 1 experienced a widespread outage for upwards of 30 minutes....

In an interview with CNBC today, the Mayo Clinic’s chair of cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Paul Friedman shared that they have seen promising results using AI to detect an often symptom-less heart defect. It’s called asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction, which means a weak heart pump. In Mayo Clinic’s studies, they are using AI to read ECGs and finding impressive results identifying weak heart pumps and even predicting individuals who will be at risk in the future....

Last year, police departments started speaking out against a wave of gun-shaped iPhone cases that were gaining popularity. If common sense wasn’t enough, police departments warned that using such cases was a “terrible idea” and puts people in danger. Nevertheless, a London man could be facing charges for having a gun-shaped iPhone cased while at London Stansted Airport this week. In a series of tweets, the Essex police shamed the man, warning everyone that cops have a “split second decision to make” in instances like this....

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have been a phenomenal success - but it’s had a lot of problems with directors over the years. A quick look at the box office will indicate the sheer scale of Marvel’s success; the MCU has grossed over $22 billion in the global box office. Incredibly, Marvel added over $5 billion to that cumulative total just in 2019. Behind the scenes, though, Marvel has had more than its fair share of problems....

Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story is one of the most acclaimed films of the year, as the Netflix exclusive takes on the gut-wrenching topic of divorce. In a year jam-packed with potential Oscar winners, from Joker to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to Parasite and much more, it’s Netflix’s personal drama Marriage Story that has emerged as the frontrunner as well as the film most universally adored by critics. According to Metacritic, Baumbach’s film is the second most-mentioned title in critics’ top ten lists for 2019, right behind Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman....

Marvel Comics’ mystery SHIELD replacement has its eye on the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane. Founded by Silas Ravencroft, the Ravencroft Institute is basically Marvel’s equivalent of Arkham Asylum. It’s particularly well known for housing Carnage and was destroyed during the recent Absolute Carnage event. But there’s still a need for a place like Ravencroft, and as a result, it’s been rebuilt. Apple first unveiled its Health application and associated HealthKit framework during WWDC earlier this year with a quote from Dr. John H. Noseworthy, CEO of the Mayo Clinic, a development partner for the iOS Health platform. Now a new report from the Star Tribune claims that the Mayo Clinic will have a role in revealing the next-generation health capabilities of an upcoming device at tomorrow’s event. It’s not yet clear whether this will happen during a look at iOS 8 or during the preview of Apple’s first wearable device and its health-tracking capabilities....

A group of major app developers have set up their own association, seemingly geared to doing the same job as The App Association, an existing group sponsored by Apple and other tech giants. They have formed the App Coalition, which seeks to lobby Congress on behalf of app developers, especially during the coronavirus crisis … Bloomberg reports. Both groups say they are willing to work together, though the fact that some developers see a need to form a new association suggests that things may not be as collegiate as their public statements would suggest....

We’ve cautioned many times that Apple patents a huge number of inventions that will never see the light of day. Last year alone, the company was awarded 2,566 ‘utility’ patents–those covering actual technologies, rather than mere designs. The fact that Apple has patented something tells us absolutely nothing about its future product line. But that didn’t stop traders going crazy yesterday over a patent awarded for a GoPro-like action camera: GoPro shares fell as much as 15% as panicking traders dumped the stock....

After last week’s successful launch of iOS 12, it’s now the Mac’s turn to receive its yearly software update in the form of macOS Mojave. Version 10.14 of macOS includes loads of new features to help make your life on the desktop easier. Mojave also includes a refined screenshot interface, and apps that were previously exclusive to iOS like Home, Voice Memos, Stocks and Apple News....
